Our Livestock and Workers
Our staff works hard to make sure that your Lonesome Hollow Honey experience is perfect. Our bees literally work themselves to death over a six-week period of time. The cattle work effortlessly mowing the grass and fertilizing the fields. The two-legged members of the team support the bees and cattle, harvest the honey, and distribute our products.
Our Bees' Field Companions
Santa Gertrudis and Angus Cattle
Santa Gertrudis, breed of beef cattle developed in the 20th century by the King Ranch in Texas. It originally resulted from crossing Brahman bulls of about seven-eighths pure breeding and purebred Shorthorn cows. The Aberdeen Angus, sometimes simply Angus, is a Scottish breed of small beef cattle. It derives from cattle native to the counties of Aberdeenshire and Angus in north-eastern Scotland. The Angus is naturally polled and solid black or red, though the udder may be white.
Wylie
Bee watcher and future cattle dog
Wylie, Jerry and Sherrill' new border collie, joined the team in mid-April at 2 months old. He comes from a ranch in Idaho where his parents are working cattle dogs. He enjoys watching the cattle come to the water trough from the camper. He is great company on commutes between Colorado and Texas and entertains everyone at the ranch staying cool in the sprinklers. He practices the "Border Collie stare" with the cows when they get too close to the house or trailer. He looks forward to using his natural herding talents helping move the cattle between pastures.
Jerry Alles
Co-Owner and Beekeeper
A retired computer scientist with a desire to be a beekeeper. After 40 years of working in computer rooms and cubicles, outdoors working with the bees has been a welcomed new adventure. The rest of his time is spent training his second best friend, Wylie.
